How US sales tax works

There is no national sales tax or VAT in the United States. 45 states and the District of Columbia charge a statewide sales tax, and in most of them counties, cities and special districts add their own rates. Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon have no statewide sales tax, although some Alaskan and Montanan localities do.

Where the rate comes from

Most states tax a sale where the buyer receives it, so the combined rate depends on the delivery address. Each state’s rate lookup gives the exact figure. Since the 2018 Wayfair decision, remote sellers must also register in states where their sales pass that state’s economic nexus threshold, often $100,000 a year.

Is my product taxable?

Most physical goods are taxable. Services, software, digital products, groceries and clothing vary a lot between states. Check the state agency’s guidance before you add tax to an invoice, and keep exemption certificates from customers who buy for resale.
